Spring pictures were taken as an opportunity for Averroes Academy families to have portraits of their children in spring clothing rather than the school uniform. Parents will purchase a variety of prints of their children, if they choose, and a portion of the proceeds will be donated back to the school.
Earth Day was commemorated, thanks to the Northbrook Public works, by the planting of flowers and cleaning up of the grounds around the school. Each student received a tee shirt for his or her hard work.
Passport to the World was a great success! Students spent the month of April preparing reports and display boards each describing a different country of the world. Even kindergartners participated within their capabilities. In addition to giving students a greater appreciation of the various countries that make up our world, the students were able to apply research and communication skills.
Students have been collecting money to contribute to the Northbrook Rotary Collection for Polio Vaccines. Students were asked to donate pennies to purchase vaccines for residents of Nigeria, North India and Pakistan. Two staff members agreed to match the donations resulting in over $600 in collection—well exceeding their goal, MashaAllah.
The students in Nasheed al-Huda performed for the first time in front of an audience—and it was an audience of almost 1000 people! Our school represented the Muslim Community of the Libertyville area in an interfaith, interagency inaugural assembly. The students sang three songs: one about giving to others, one about the earth and one about diversity.
