We are happy to inform you all that our school, Averroes Academy, has had its 7th annual dinner this year on Friday, March 10, 2006 at Bristol Court in Mount Prospect, Illinois. Our keynote speaker this year was Dr. Muqtedar Khan, Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science and International Relations at the University of Delaware.
After many years of stellar performance, Averroes Academy can justifiably make the claim of providing a broad, balanced education while preserving and promoting Islamic ideals. With any endeavor, success breeds success and now Averroes Academy is pleased to find itself outgrowing its present premises, generously provided by the Islamic Cultural Center of Northbrook. The Board of Trustees of Averroes Academy has recently purchased a parcel of land in Northbrook that will allow the establishment of a multi-purpose, state-of-the-art, energy efficient, 21st century facility that will accommodate our present needs. Of course, this worthy venture would not be possible without the high-minded generous spirit already demonstrated by Chicago-area Muslims and by those from elsewhere. Now we earnestly invite you, our more fortunate brothers and sisters in Islam, to step forward and make your contribution to this effort. You will, Insha-Allah, be leaving a lasting legacy for your children and those of generations to come by donating as much as possible to the school construction fund. Few investments can be as effective in achieving Allah’s blessings in Al-Akhira as one such as this. Together we can make the Chicago area a beacon of enlightenment in Islamic primary education visible to the entire world. Come and be a part of this! Our key note speaker this year will be Dr. Muqtedar Khan, Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science and International Relations at the University of Delaware. Prior to that he was Chair of the Department of Political Science and the Director of International Studies at Adrian College. He is a Non-resident Fellow at the Brookings Institution. He earned his Ph.D. in International Relations, Political Philosophy, and Islamic Political Thought, from Georgetown University in May 2000. Dr. Khan is also associated with the Center for the Study of Islam and Democracy and the Institute for Social Policy and Understanding. He has been the President, Vice President and General Secretary of the Association of Muslim Social Scientists. He is the author of American Muslims: Bridging Faith and Freedom (Amana, 2002) and Jihad for Jerusalem: Identity and Strategy in International Relations (Praeger, 2004). His forthcoming books are titled Beyond Jihad and Crusade: Rethinking US policy in the Muslim World (Brookings Institution, 2006) and Islam, Democracy and Political Theory (Lexington Books, 2005). Dr. Khan frequently comments on BBC, CNN, FOX and VOA TV, NPR and other radio and TV networks. His political commentaries appear regularly in newspapers in over 20 countries. He has also lectured in North America, East Asia, Middle East and Europe . Dr. Khan writes a regular Weblog called Globalog. His articles on Islam and American Muslims can be read at Ijtihad and his commentaries on global politics can be read at Glocaleye.
