Welcome to Averroes Academy! Print

NCA Accredited

At Averroes Academy, we envision a world where Muslims contribute to all areas of achievement and advancement with a consciousness of what being a Muslim means guiding their activities. We envision such Muslims as always striving toward an ideal that engages and embraces both Muslims and non-Muslims with respect, leading them to a more complete understanding of Islam.

Our mission at Averroes Academy is to prepare students to have exemplary knowledge and understanding and to inspire them to become scholars in any field which realizes their potential as good Muslims and positive, contributing members of society. We aim to be a model institution in both educational and spiritual endeavors.

Averroes Academy was named after the great Muslim jurist, physician, and philosopher Abu al-Walid Muhammad ibn Rushd (also known as Averroes), who was born in Cordoba, Spain in 520 A.H./1126 C.E. His contribution to civilization represents the apex of Muslim intellectual achievement. His most notable contributions are his treatises on Islamic jurisprudence and law, and his commentaries on Greek philosophy. These commentaries influenced European thought for centuries.

Ibn Rushd's superiority in both religious and secular knowledge represents an ideal paradigm for all Muslims and is the inspiration for Averroes Academy.

Our Core Values

These values foster a partnership among us: students, families, school and a community.

  • God-Consciousness (Taqwa) - We believe these values should be inculcated in a nurturing, supportive, Islamic climate.

  • Excellence - We promote the highest standard of quality education for our learning community.

  • Individual - We recognize that the physical, academic, social, and emotional needs of each student are different.

  • Respect - We appreciate and value the uniqueness of each child.

  • Diversity - We understand, honor, and accommodate the varied abilities and cultures of our learning community.

  • Empowerment - We produce confident, self-reliant, and determined learners.

  • Collaboration - We collectively work together for on-going school improvement

The foregoing Islamic precepts underlie the values of the North Shore Education Foundation (NSEF) in its establishment of a full-time parochial school in the North Shore area of Chicago. Realizing that education is one of the most fundamental values and obligations for the Muslim community, NSEF has taken the lead to establish a school which will provide a high standard education, along side traditional Islamic sciences. Because NSEF believes that being American is clearly compatible with being Muslim, this school will provide a balanced approach to education both academically and socially.

Additionally, NSEF believes that this institution can make a positive contribution in this society by promoting justice and truth. Accordingly, the goals of such a program are three-fold:

  • To provide an excellent academic curriculum as a model for any public or private school in the area, with a heavy emphasis on reading, writing, and public speaking;

  • To provide an Islamic education that nurtures the development of Islamic scholars and promotes the learning of traditional Islamic sciences, with a heavy emphasis on Arabic and Islamic jurisprudence;

  • To provide an environment for American Muslim children which promotes Islamic spirituality and God-consciousness.

With these goals in mind, NSEF believes that this school, God willing, will produce exceptionally educated children with positive moral and ethical values who will go on to succeed in higher education and will make positive contributions to American society, including the Muslim community.
